On the edge: Micromax mobile advantage

Micromax is now India’s third-largest GSM mobile phone vendor with a market share of 6 percent after Nokia (62 percent) and Samsung (8 percent), according to research firm IDC. It sells anywhere from 700,000 to one million mobile phones every month. And by its own estimates it is now selling nearly Rs.1,500 crore worth of phones annually.

“We are not the poor cousins of Nokia,” says Vikas Jain, one of the four friends who together started and grew Micromax to its present position. “Instead we will force Nokia to launch newer products to compete with us.”

Nokia, on Monday announced the launch of the world’s first money transfer platform through mobiles in India as it enjoys the market leader’s hip and a wide distribution network in the world’s one of the fasting growing handset market.

Niklas Savander, executive vice-president, services at Nokia, told a press conference that the pilot project has been launched in Pune last week in partnership with Yes Bank and Obopay, which runs mobile payments platform. He, however, did not divulge the time of the commercial launch of the project.

Airtel joins race to tap mobile apps market

India’s largest mobile operator, Bharti Airtel, has joined the race with handset makers such as Nokia, RIM (maker of BlackBerry) and Samsung among others to get a share of the mobile applications market in India.

Bharti’s app store is set to go live on Wednesday (February 10) with over 1,200 applications making it the first Indian telco to attempt replicating the highly successful business model of Apple, the pioneer in this space.

Nokia Smartphones to get free GPS navigation

Nokia has officially announced that they are going to provide free GPS turn-by-turn navigation service for all Nokia smartphones worldwide.

There are some Nokia smart phones that are currently enjoying the free GPS navigation such as the 5800 Navigation edition and the 2700 Navigation edition. And they’re adding more phones to get the free GPS, which are listed for you after the jump.

Nokia plans Digital marketing for N Series, E Series and XpressMusic handsets

Nokia now plans to focus on digital marketing initiatives for multimedia ‘N Series’ devices, business ‘E Series’ phones and ‘XpressMusic’ handsets.

Nokia’s decision has come after experiencing huge success with its recent online marketing campaigns in India for some models.

“Some such digital media campaigns will also feature our brand ambassadors, Shah Rukh Khan and Priyanka Chopra. We are amongst the largest spenders in the digital marketing space in India,” Nokia India head (activation, media, online sales and marketing) Viral Oza told.

Nokia sees devil in Onida’s cell ad

The brand that romped home with a spot featuring a diagonally cracked television set has grown to include washing machines, microwaves, and now, mobile handsets. And the owner continues to be proud, but Onida’s latest neighbour is not envious, but downright peeved.

Nokia, the world’s largest handset maker, has taken offence at Onida’s new ad that targets the Finnish company heads on. ‘Dimaag Nahi Hai Tabhi To No Kiya’, goes the punchline playing upon Nokia and ‘No Kiya’, in the spot designed by McCann-Erickson.

Nokia 5530 and 5230 launched in India

Mobile handset major Nokia India today launched touch screen enabled handset devices, triggering competition in that segment.

“By 2012, 40 per cent of mobile devices will have touch “sensitive” screen and the market size (of touch screen models) would reach 90 million devices, Nokia Regional General Manager (South) T S Sridhar, citing a report said.

He said the Nokia 5530 XpressMusic is from the same platform as Nokia 5800. Compared to the earlier version which had the option of customising only four contacts,the new model would have 20 customised contacts, he said. The phone, with a stainless steel frame finish, is priced at Rs 14,029.

Nokia 5235 announced

Soon after the announcement of the Nokia 5230, it’s time now to welcome another Music oriented phone from Nokia. Say hello to the just introduced Nokia 5235. Note that the 5230 was not an XpressMusic branded phone, neither is this one. However, it does come with the “Comes With Music” service loaded.

The 5235 is being marketed as a “Comes With Music” phone – which means the device will come preloaded with quite a few free audio tracks and will come with a 12 or 18 month subscription for Nokia’s Comes with Music service – all for free.
