Microsoft Corp launched two new phones (Kin one and Kin two) aimed at young people, marking a fresh assault on the low end of the growing smartphone market, where BlackBerry maker Research in Motion Ltd and Apple Inc now dominate.
“Kin is an interesting attempt to target the 15 to 25 market,” said Ross Rubin, consumer electronics and wireless industry analyst at market research firm NPD Group.
Microsoft on Monday announced that its Windows phone 7 operating system for mobile phones will be available by this Christmas season, as a whole new platform that incorporates social networking, music, video, photos and games to provide a rich, personalised user experience.
At the Mobile World Congress that opened here, Microsoft’s Chief Executive Officer Steve Ballmer unveiled the features that the Windows Phone 7 to be manufactured to specifications laid down by the company, will offer.
The world’s leading software firm Microsoft is now focusing on the fast growing smartphones market in India after the netbooks segment– a new category created to brigde the gap between mobiles and laptops– received lukewarm response from buyers.
“We have heavily invested in that space and will continue to do so. It is still a very competitive space,” Microsoft Corporate Vice President (OEM Division) Steve Guggenheimer told PTI.
Tata Docomo, the GSM brand of Tata Teleservices Limited, and Microsoft India have entered into a long term, strategic partnership to provide next generation telecom products and services to Indian consumers.
“In the immediate term, the partnership will involve the promotion of new Windows Phones-Acer Be Touch E101 and Acer Neo Touch s200, powered by Windows Mobile 6.5″, Anil Sardana, MD, Tata Teleservices Limited, told reporters here today.
The latest high tech mobile phones are entering the market quiet often, in response to it, Microsoft has initiated with the lower configuration applications for cellphones as OneApp.
This Microsoft OneApp platform will allow users to be familiar with the applications like Facebook, Twitter, Windows live messenger etc. Microsoft may tie-up with Blue Label Telecoms Group of South Africa. This lash would be an initial startup to establish the mobile stores.

Multi-touch is the must-have feature for all digital devices this year. The craze for this spiralled after the launch of Apple iPhones and has now become all pervasive. In fact, “touch” is the new by-word for all electronics devices in the market today. Microsoft is providing further insight into how the company will be operating its Windows Marketplace for Mobile software service.
The company first revealed the service last month at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) conference in Barcelona. Microsoft is hoping that the Marketplace will help the upcoming Windows Mobile 6.5 release remain competitive with the iPhone, Blackberry and Android platforms, each of which maintain their own online stores for third-party software.
