Karbonn Mobiles now title sponsor of ‘IPL Nights’

Handset manufacturer Karbonn Mobiles, a joint venture between Delhi-based Jaina Group and Bangalore-based UTL group, on Tuesday said it has inked a long-term sponsorship contract with the Indian Premier League (IPL).

As part of the deal, Karbonn Mobiles will be the IPL’s Official Partner Mobile Phone, Karbonn said in a statement.

Google planning lighter version of Nexus One for India

The Internet giant Google is planning to launch a ‘mini’ version of Nexus One which will be pocket friendly.

The executives of Google India are right now busy in planning the strategy and the Google India head Mr. Shailesh Rao told CNBC TV 18 representative Mr. Ankit. After an editorial meet with Google India Head, Mr. Ankit informed this via a tweet on twitter.

‘Expert’ mobile phone thief arrested in Ahemdabad

A doctor’s son arrested in Ahemdabad on charge of stealing mobile phones had turned to crime after being thrown out of home by his brother, police said on Wednesday.

36-year-old Mumbai-based Raj Goswami would zoom into Ahmedabad, do a fast job picking up mobiles from hostels and hospitals and be back at his base after selling them off, police alleged.

They claimed to have seized 42 mobile phones from Goswami, who was arrested on Tuesday.

Micromax is now India’s third-largest GSM mobile phone vendor with a market share of 6 percent after Nokia (62 percent) and Samsung (8 percent), according to research firm IDC. It sells anywhere from 700,000 to one million mobile phones every month. And by its own estimates it is now selling nearly Rs.1,500 crore worth of phones annually.

“We are not the poor cousins of Nokia,” says Vikas Jain, one of the four friends who together started and grew Micromax to its present position. “Instead we will force Nokia to launch newer products to compete with us.”

Telecom operator MTS may go for IPO

MTS, Russia’s largest mobile phone operator that launched CDMA mobile telephony services in India in early 2009 is planning to go for an IPO. The brand’s present subscriber base is about 3.5 million across 11 circles in the country.

Speaking at a pre-launch meeting of MTS mobile telephony services in Andhra Pradesh, Vsevolod Rozanov, president and CEO of Sistema Shyam Teleservices (SSTL) said, “We have begun preparing for IPO, technically we should be ready with a plan in six to nine months subject to market conditions.”

Mobile handset manufacturers, as well as importers in India, would soon have to get their handsets tested for radiation before any launch across the country, if the recommendations of Telecom Engineering Centre (TEC), the technical arm of the department of telecommunications, are accepted.

A TEC committee set up to study issues related to implementation of the International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection (ICNIRP) guidelines has said the manufacturer/importer would have to provide two random samples of each model being sold in India to TEC for compliance monitoring before the launch. The test fee would have to borne by the companies.

BSNL loses Ethiopian Tele deal bid

In yet another setback to its international expansion plans, Bharat Sanchar Nigam (BSNL) has lost the bid for managing telecom networks of the Ethiopian Telecommunications Corp (ETC), a state monopoly in the African nation.

“BSNL had bid aggressively for the contract, but lost to France Telecom,” sources familiar with the development told ET. They said although BSNL had made a financially better offer than France Tele, it did not qualify on some other criteria, including operational performance in the domestic market.

Mobile calls to helpline may no longer be toll-free

The Indian mobile customer, used to making calls to customer-care call centres for free, may no longer have that luxury.

CNBC-TV18 reports, quoting exclusive sources, that Indian mobile operators have approached the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) approving its nod to levy a charge for making calls to the helpline.

Aamir Khan bags biggest endorsement deal with Etisalat

Well, Aamir Khan has just landed the biggest endorsement deal in Indian advertising history. He will promote new telecom entrant, UAE’s Etisalat, for Rs 30-35 crore for three years, kicking in some fresh energy into the Indian advertising segment that has been licking its wounds from the financial slowdown.

Mr Khan, along with his Bollywood competitor Shah Rukh Khan, already commands the biggest rates, pegged at Rs 6-8 crore per year per endorsement.
