Airtel takes Pay-Per-Second tariff war outside India

Posted on the November 24th, 2009 under callingCard by Rohit

The country’s largest mobile operator, Bharti Airtel, on Tuesday took the tariff war abroad as it launched pay-per-second plan for its US customers using calling card to make calls to India.

With this, Airtel became the first to offer pay-per second plan on India calling cards in the US.

As per the plan, the $6.99 calling card comes with an administration fee of $0.49, offering customers a tariff of just 0.03 cents/sec on the balance $6.50. The card has a validity period of 30 days.

Initially opposed to such tariff plans in India citing its unsustainability in the long run as it would hit company’s financial health, Airtel has not only matched it within the country but has also initiated it in the global market.

Airtel CallHome has so far been available in the UK, Canada and Singapore besides in the US.

“Ushering in a new paradigm in calling tariffs vis-à-vis conventional plans, this initiative empowers customers to pay only for the duration they talk,” Airtel said in a statement.

The new tariff plan is in line with Airtel CallHome’s strategy of offering best value for the US to India calling through innovative, breakthrough propositions such as “India One – One Cent Calling Plan to India” and “Mharo Plan – Offering Best Value for calling to Gujarat, Mumbai, Maharashtra and Rajasthan from the US”.
